What Is Poza Los Coyotes?
Poza Los Coyotes is an area with crystal-clear natural pools located in a secluded setting, surrounded by beautiful nature. It is fed by a freshwater stream, making it an ideal spot for swimming, enjoying peaceful moments, and reconnecting with nature. In other words, it’s the perfect place to relax. Whether you are visiting with family, friends, a partner, or enjoying some solo time, it provides a beautiful setting to spend the day.
The water comes from Río Blanco, created from the Rincon de la Vieja Volcano, which is the most active Volcano in Guanacaste. The pH levels of the water are too high for most aquatic wildlife to survive, but they are not harmful to humans. Because of this, there is little to no wildlife in the water. Sometimes you may see a few small fish, but you generally don’t have to worry about larger fish or other animals underwater.

When we arrived at Poza Los Coyotes at 8:30am, the gate was still closed and the area finally opened at around 9am. You should also keep in mind that while the park closes at 5pm, the last possible entrance is at 4pm.

How to Get to Poza Los Coyotes
Located just outside the town of Curubandé, Poza Los Coyotes is accessible only by car or private transportation, there is no public transportation to get there. The road is drivable with a regular car, you don’t need a 4×4 vehicle. The nearest major town is Liberia, which is a hub for travelers visiting nearby attractions like Rincon de la Vieja National Park.
Directions to Poza Los Coyotes from Liberia
Drive for approximately 20 minutes north on Highway #1, following the signs toward La Cruz. Unfortunately, there is no sign indicating the correct intersection to reach Poza Los Coyotes, but there is a sign that says “Proyecto Geotérmico Borinquen 24” indicating an entrance on your right. Take this entrance to turn onto a gravel road. From there, continue for about 10 minutes and you will see the entrance to Poza Los Coyotes on your right.

Directions to Poza Los Coyotes from Rincon de La Vieja
Coming down from Rincon de la Vieja National Park, after approximately 20 minutes you will reach the small village of Curubandé, passing La Leona Waterfall Adventure Hike office. You will then reach an intersection where you should turn right, passing by a supermarket on your right. As you follow the road, you will reach another intersection on your way to a restaurant “Rancho Los Gavilanes”; turn right here. You will cross a small bridge along the way until you reach a Y-shaped intersection. Keep to the left and continue, the road will soon turn into a gravel road. Continue straight following the signs to Poza Los Coyotes until you reach the entrance on your left.

If you don’t have access to a car, arranging private transportation in advance is generally the easiest way to reach Poza Los Coyotes. Planning ahead is recommended, especially during high season. Best Time to Visit Poza Los Coyotes
The best time to visit Poza Los Coyotes is often described as the dry season, typically mentioned by most blogs as lasting from December to April. However, in Rincon de la Vieja, the local climate varies slightly. While many travelers believe the rainy season spans from May to November, the most rainfall in this region actually occurs in September and October. During these two months, the risk of sudden and very dangerous flash floods is quite high, and it is not recommended to visit the river during this time, especially if the water looks muddy or if heavy rains have occurred.
In reality, the dry season in Rincon de la Vieja extends from late November until late August. During this period, the weather is much more favorable for outdoor activities like hiking and swimming, and the water levels and the color at Poza Los Coyotes are ideal.
What to Expect at Poza Los Coyotes
Poza Los Coyotes offers visitors a peaceful environment, far from the crowds of more touristy locations. The natural pools are refreshing and perfect for a dip after a hike through the surrounding trails. The area is mostly uncommercialized, so visitors can enjoy a truly natural experience.
Near the entrance you will find basic facilities including tube rentals (₡1.000–₡5.000) in different sizes, optional life jackets, picnic tables, and small snacks and drinks available for purchase.
All the main attractions are located within a short walking distance from the reception area, making it easy to explore the entire area in just a few hours.

As there is no map providing an overview of the area, it can be a little difficult to find all the attractions at Poza Los Coyotes. I’m originally from Germany and have been living in Guanacaste for several years now. However, I visited the river multiple times without discovering all the amazing places hidden in the area. It was only later that local guides told me about the Coyote Cave and explained that it is possible to climb down the canyon to get a spectacular view of it.
In this section, we will show you all the attractions at Poza Los Coyotes and describe exactly how to reach them so you won’t miss out on any of the great experiences that I overlooked for a long time while living here.

The Main Poza Los Coyotes
After passing the reception and getting your entrance tickets, you will reach a picnic area and see the river in front of you. To visit the main pond, Poza Los Coyotes first, which gives the area its name, take the trail at the left side next to the reception and the tube rental. This is also a good moment to rent a tube and take it with you to the pond if you’d like to float down the small rapids from the upper section of the river.
Follow the trail for a few minutes until you reach a sign that says “Poza Los Coyotes”. From there, descend the path on the right to reach the pond.
Poza Los Coyotes has stunning blue, crystal-clear water. Take a dip, float down the river with a tube, or even try cliff jumping for some excitement. Keep in mind that the pond can reach a depth of up to 2.5 meters, so be cautious, especially if you are visiting with children. It’s a great spot for adventure, but make sure to keep an eye on the little ones!
Poza La Presa
If you choose to float down the river with a tube, you will automatically reach a section where the water flows gently over rocks, creating a peaceful scenery that invites you to relax. This is the part of the river located directly in front of you when entering the area from the reception.
The water is about 1.2 meters deep and only reaches around waist level, making it perfect for relaxing in the river with a refreshing drink and a chat with your friends. Enjoy a calm and social moment in this ideal spot.
Las Pocitas
Las Pocitas translates to “tiny ponds” in Spanish, and it’s the perfect spot for kids to hang out. These ponds are quite shallow, making them ideal for little ones to have fun and play safely. It’s a great place for children to enjoy while you keep an eye on them.
To get to this part of the river, from Poza La Presa head to the right and cross a little bridge, following the sign to “Las Pocitas”.
The Canyon
The next spot you should definitely visit when exploring Poza Los Coyotes is the Canyon, whose golden rocks encircle the river, creating a breathtaking backdrop for photos and unforgettable memories.
To get there, follow the path next to Las Pocitas, there are signs indicating the way to the Canyon. Once you step onto the sunny rock plateau and catch a glimpse of the water rushing through the canyon, be cautious at all times, it can be very dangerous if you fall down there!
If you are wearing closed shoes with good grip, you can climb down the canyon to get a spectacular view of the smooth rock formations shaped by the rushing water. To reach this viewpoint, turn right next to the large sign marking the spot and pass through a small “mini canyon”. From there, you can carefully climb down the rocks to reach a perfect photo spot.
The Coyote Cave
Coyote Cave is one of the most iconic and picturesque spots at Poza Los Coyotes. A huge rock formation creates a triangle-shaped opening that you can swim through, making it feel as if you are entering a massive cave.
To get there, turn your back to the Canyon and follow the short path that leads toward the parking area. From there, you will see a sign indicating the way to “Cueva Del Coyote”. Follow the trail for about five minutes until you reach an intersection. The path on the left leads to a viewpoint where you can observe the river from high above, while the path on the right leads to the Coyote Cave.
Continue along the trail, descend the hill to return to the edge of the river. Turn left and you will reach the impressive rock formation of the Coyote Cave. This area is also a great spot for cliff jumping from an even higher point!
La Playa
If you enjoy hiking, you can follow the trail to La Playa, which means “beach” in Spanish. At this spot, the river forms a small beach-like area with a shoreline where you can relax under the shade of the trees.
Since it is a bit of a longer walk, approximately 20 minutes from the main parking area, you can enjoy some privacy at La Playa, as only a few visitors take this hike.
The trail starts next to the reception and the tube rental area, just like the path to Poza Los Coyotes. However, watch out: near the beginning of the trail you need to choose the smaller path that goes up the hill, not the one that goes to Poza Los Coyotes. There is no sign indicating to La Playa at the start.
From there, follow the trail until you reach a viewpoint where you can see another canyon that Río Blanco passes through. Continue following the signs and descend the hill to reach La Playa.

Poza Los Coyotes is equipped with all the basic facilities you need to enjoy a full day at the river.

There is no age limit to visit Poza Los Coyotes, and it can be a fun place for kids to play and enjoy the refreshing water. You can rent tubes in different sizes to float through the different ponds, and life jackets are available if your little ones are not yet confident swimming on their own.
Several parts of the river are shallow, allowing even younger children to enter the water. However, we recommend to supervise your kids during your stay at the ponds, as there is always a gentle current and some pools can reach depths of up to 2.5 meters.
A great option is to enjoy the experience together by floating down the river with tubes and exploring the different paths around the area while keeping a close eye on your children.
Ecosystem of Poza Los Coyotes
The natural pools are part of the tropical ecosystem and part of Costa Rica’s extensive network of protected natural areas. The water is pure, and the surrounding forest untouched, creating an ideal environment for both plant and animal species. If you’re lucky and keep an eye on your surroundings, you may spot a variety of birds, lizards, large and colorful butterflies, and even monkeys in the trees.

- Come in the morning:
We recommend arriving around 9am, when you can be sure the park is already open. This gives you the whole day to explore the area, and most visitors haven’t arrived yet. The light conditions are also perfect at this time, and the water is usually crystal clear and shimmers blue.
- What to pack:
Bring sunscreen, insect repellent, and a hat to protect yourself from the sun. Footwear with good grip is recommended if you plan on hiking to La Playa or climbing down the canyon.
- Safety recommendations:
The water is generally safe for swimming, but always check for updates or warnings from locals or the staff, especially during September and October, when conditions may change due to rainfall.
- Be mindful of your belongings:
There are no secured storage areas and it’s best to avoid leaving valuable items in your car. A good option for carrying valuables at Costa Rica’s rivers and beaches without getting them wet is a 5- or 10-liter dry bag. You can even wear it like a small backpack while swimming in the river. It’s possible to buy dry bags in surf shops or in larger supermarkets like Walmart. However, we recommend buying one before traveling to Costa Rica, for example on Amazon, so you have it available immediately.
💡 Local Discovery Tip:
If you’re interested in Costa Rican history, look for stones that appear rusty or have a reddish surface. With a little water, you can rub them onto another stone to create a red-colored paste that can be used for natural face painting. Long ago, indigenous people in Costa Rica used oxidized iron, among other natural pigments, to paint pottery, in spanish this is called “Curiol”.
We found several of these stones along the shoreline near Coyote Cave.
