Both activities start at the La Leona Waterfall Adventure Hike tour base in the small village of Curubandé, just 20 minutes from Liberia in Guanacaste.
The La Leona Waterfall Adventure Hike follows the Rio Blanco, while the river tubing tour takes place on the Colorado River. 4×4 transportation from our reception to each activity is included and takes only 5 minutes. After your first activity, you’ll return to our tour base, where you can take a short break and enjoy lunch or a snack at our on-site La Leona Restaurant before getting ready for your second tour.

LA LEONA WATERFALL ADVENTURE HIKE
⏱ 2.5-3 hours
🥾 4 km (2.5 mi)
A 5-minute 4×4 ride and a short walk through the forest will take you to the Rio Blanco.
Follow a mystic jungle trail covered with rocks and roots, and cross the turquoise river about five times until you reach the final section of the hike.
To enter the cave where La Leona Waterfall is hidden, you’ll swim along a safety rope through a spectacular volcanic river canyon, a truly unique experience in Costa Rica.
After climbing over the last few rocks, La Leona Waterfall appears before you, surrounded by majestic volcanic rock formations. Enjoy a swim in the bright blue pool before heading back through the jungle.

RINCON DE LA VIEJA RIVER TUBING
⏱ ~ 1.5 hours
🌊 Class I-III rapids
Hop onto another 4×4 vehicle to reach the tour starting point. After a short walk to the Colorado River, you’ll receive a short safety briefing from your guides.
Get into your tube and let’s go! Splash through exciting rapids and paddle through calmer river sections, where you can enjoy the beautiful tropical surroundings.
An experienced team of guides will accompany you throughout the tour and position themselves at every larger rapid to help you pass through safely. There are safety ropes set up before the rapids where you acn wait and pass through one by one.
At the end of the tour, it’s a short, easy walk up our stairs to your ride back.
ℹ️ Extra Attention for Small Children
The La Leona Waterfall Tubing combo tour is suitable for active kids ages 6 and up. Our experienced guides stay close to young children during the hike and help whenever needed.
During river tubing, small kids are assigned a dedicated guide who holds onto their tube throughout the tour to reduce the risk of flipping or falling out. They also don’t need to use a paddle, as their guide gently pushes the tube through the calmer river sections, so they can simply relax and have fun.

You can get to the tour starting point in Curubandé with your own or a rental car, or by choosing the option with transportation included.
Directions From Liberia
💡 You don’t need a 4×4 vehicle to get to our tour office, but drive carefully as parts of the road may have potholes.
1️⃣ From Liberia, drive about 5 km north on Highway 1.
2️⃣ Turn right when you see signs pointing to Rincon de la Vieja National Park and continue for about 15 minutes.
3️⃣ Reach the village of Curubandé and continue straight, passing by the church.
4️⃣ After about 300 m you will find our tour office on your left, clearly marked with large signs.

You don’t need any previous hiking experience, but a basic level of fitness is required. Swimming skills are not necessary, as you’ll wear a life jacket and can use ropes to move through the swimming sections. Your guide will assist you along the trail whenever needed.

What happens if it rains on the day of my La Leona Waterfall Tubing tour?
If it rains, we monitor river and weather conditions closely to check if the tour can operate safely. During the rainy season, water levels can sometimes rise significantly, increasing the risk of flash floods. If conditions are unsafe, the tour will be cancelled.
