Experience Rincon de la Vieja’s stunning river canyons from two different perspectives: first, hike through the jungle along the Rio Blanco and swim beneath epic canyon walls on the La Leona Waterfall Adventure Hike. After a short break at our tour base and optional lunch, drive 10 minutes to a thrilling Rincon de la Vieja zip lining course that takes you over tropical forest and across impressive volcanic canyons.

La Leona Waterfall and Zip Lining – Location
The first part of this combo package is the La Leona Waterfall Adventure Hike. It starts at our tour office in Curubande, just 20 minutes from Liberia in Guanacaste. After the hike, you can use our facilities to get ready for zip lining and, if you want, enjoy lunch, a drink or a snack at our on-site La Leona Restaurant.
Then you’ll continue to the zip lining course, located about 10 minutes away at a Rincon de la Vieja adventure park. If you’ve booked the self-drive option, you can follow your guide to the zip lining location in your own vehicle. If you’ve booked the tour with transportation included, your driver will take you there.

LA LEONA WATERFALL ADVENTURE HIKE
⏱ 2.5-3 hours

Meet your guide and get ready with a life jacket and dry bag. A fun 5-minute 4×4 ride and a short walk through light forest will take you to the riverbed.
Here you’ll reach the first of five river crossings, with ropes set up across the river to help you keep your balance. Then hike through dense forest, climb over volcanic rocks and ladders, and, with a little luck, spot local wildlife.
To reach the hidden waterfall cave, you’ll swim along a rope through an epic canyon in the bright blue river, with your guide always close to assist you when needed.
Enjoy the breathtaking La Leona Waterfall, surrounded by volcanic formations, and the natural pool, before making your way back through the forest.

Before starting the tour, you’ll receive a short safety briefing from your guides explaining how to use your equipment and control your speed on the lines.
Take a short walk to the first zip lining platform, and you’re ready to go! A guide will be on every platform to receive you and attach you to the next zip line.
Enjoy 8 adrenaline-filled zip lines taking you high above the Costa Rican forest and valleys. The zip lines vary in speed and length, offering fast runs and scenic flights with incredible views over the Colorado River canyon.
If young children don’t feel comfortable going on their own, they can go together with an experienced guide.

You can get to the tour starting point in Curubandé with your own or a rental car, or by choosing the option with transportation included. To get to the zip lining location, you can follow your guide in your own vehicle, or your driver will take you there if you booked a tour with transportation.

💡 You don’t need a 4×4 vehicle to get to our tour office, but drive carefully as parts of the road may have potholes.
1️⃣ From Liberia, drive about 5 km north on Highway 1.
2️⃣ Turn right when you see signs pointing to Rincon de la Vieja National Park and continue for about 15 minutes.
3️⃣ Reach the village of Curubandé and continue straight, passing by the church.
4️⃣ After about 300 m you will find our tour office on your left, clearly marked with large signs.

What happens if it rains on the day of my La Leona Waterfall and Zip Lining tour?
If it rains, we monitor river and weather conditions closely to check if the tour can operate safely. During the rainy season, water levels can sometimes rise significantly, increasing the risk of flash floods. If conditions are unsafe, the tour will be cancelled. Can children join the La Leona Waterfall and Zip Lining tour?
Yes, the La Leona Waterfall Adventure Hike and Rincon de la Vieja zip lining are great activities for active kids ages 6 and older.
On the La Leona Waterfall hike, kids usually enjoy climbing over rocks and ladders, crossing rivers, looking for wildlife and swimming to the waterfall cave. Children should be comfortable with these activities and with walking for 2.5–3 hours. Our experienced guides will be there to assist them whenever needed.
On the Rincon de la Vieja zip line, younger kids who don’t feel comfortable zip lining on their own can go together with a dedicated guide, so they can still enjoy the adventure with more support and confidence.
What should I wear for the La Leona Waterfall and Zip Lining tour?
For the La Leona Waterfall Adventure Hike, we recommend wearing light, fast-drying sports clothes and closed-toe shoes or sandals with straps. Flip-flops are not allowed on both tours.
On the waterfall hike, you’ll swim through sections of the river with your clothes and shoes on, so you’ll get completely wet. During the break at our tour base, you can change into dry clothes and shoes before the zip lining tour. Showers, shoe-washing stations and changing rooms are available at our tour base.
For zip lining, comfortable clothes and closed-toe shoes are the best option. Don’t forget to bring and apply sunscreen before the activities.
